International Women’s Day: Leadership, Purpose, and Possibility at ZimVie

Ruth Lopez, VP, Quality, Regulatory & Clinical, ZimVie

International Women’s Day is more than a moment of recognition to me—it is a reminder of responsibility. Responsibility to honor the women who paved the way, to support those advancing alongside us today, and to create meaningful opportunities for the next generation.

Throughout my career in Quality, Regulatory, and Clinical leadership, I’ve seen firsthand how diverse perspectives strengthen decision-making, elevate standards, and ultimately lead to better patient outcomes. In our field, integrity and innovation are essential—and the inclusion of women at every level makes our work stronger and more impactful.

At ZimVie, International Women’s Day reflects our broader commitment to excellence and inclusion in distinct ways. For example, in Quality, our role is to ensure that every product meets the highest standards of safety and effectiveness. In Regulatory, it’s our responsibility to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, give the strategy for launching new products, and serve as the market access for the organization. In Clinical, we generate the evidence that builds trust with clinicians and patients around the world, while also partnering early in the product development process to ensure new innovations are supported by the data needed to bring them forward. Our Research and Development teams drive innovation by designing and advancing new solutions that improve patient outcomes. At the same time, our Commercial teams drive customer partnerships and market growth, while IT enables the digital tools, systems, and data infrastructure that support innovation and collaboration across the business. Finance, Legal, and Compliance provide the discipline and insights in their respective areas that guide smart and ethical decision-making. HR cultivates talent and culture, and Operations ensures we deliver with consistency and precision. These interconnected efforts demand collaboration, curiosity, and courage—qualities I see demonstrated daily by talented women across our organization.

My own journey with ZimVie has been one of continuous growth and development. One thing I’ve learned in my career is to never give up. Stepping into larger leadership roles challenged me to expand my perspective, strengthen my voice, and lead with greater confidence. Growth is rarely linear—it requires resilience, openness to feedback, and a willingness to take on new challenges. I have been fortunate to have mentors and colleagues who encouraged me to step forward, speak up, and embrace opportunities that stretched me.

One piece of feedback that shaped how I lead came from a former manager who told me that in moments of important decisions, the most important thing is to remain calm. Staying calm allows you to quickly assess risk and make thoughtful decisions, even when you don’t have every answer. Leadership often means facing new challenges and finding solutions along the way. For me, that advice reinforced the importance of leading with kindness and composure—creating an environment where teams feel confident making decisions themselves and growing into leaders.

Serving as a woman on the leadership team is both an honor and a responsibility.

Representation matters. When women are present in decision-making spaces, it sends a powerful message about what is possible—not only to our team members, but to the broader industry. I am proud to contribute my perspective and to help shape an environment where all voices are valued and heard.

In addition to my role, I have the privilege of serving as Executive Sponsor of the ZimVie Women-Inspired Network. This network reflects our commitment to connection, mentorship, and professional development for women across the organization. Through shared experiences, leadership visibility, and intentional programming, we aim to create a space where women feel supported in their growth and empowered to pursue new opportunities. Seeing the engagement and impact of this community has been an incredibly meaningful part of my leadership journey.

The medical device and life sciences industries have evolved significantly, with more women stepping into technical, scientific, and executive leadership roles than ever before. That progress did not happen by accident. It came from mentorship, advocacy, resilience, and organizations willing to challenge the status quo. While we celebrate how far we’ve come, we also recognize there is still important work ahead.

For me, International Women’s Day is about commitment—to fostering environments where women feel empowered to contribute fully, to ask questions, to lead boldly, and to bring their authentic selves to work. As leaders, we set the tone. By championing development, encouraging diverse voices, and modeling inclusive leadership, we create pathways for sustained impact.

Our mission at ZimVie centers on advancing clinical technology that improves lives. When we support women in science, engineering, operations, research and development, and other tech-related professions, we expand the possibilities of that mission. Innovation thrives when different experiences and opinions are represented at the table.

Personally, I am grateful to the mentors and colleagues who have supported my career. Their encouragement reinforced an important lesson: leadership is not about having all the answers; it is about listening, learning, and lifting others as you grow. And advancing women is not solely a women’s initiative. It requires active allyship. I am also grateful for the male leaders and colleagues at ZimVie who intentionally sponsor talent, create space for different voices, and advance equity through intentional leadership every day.

This International Women’s Day, I encourage each of us to reflect on how we can contribute—whether through mentorship, collaboration, or simply recognizing the achievements of the women around us. Progress is built collectively, and every action matters.

Together, we can continue shaping a culture where talent is recognized, opportunity is accessible, and innovation is driven by the full diversity of our people.

That is what International Women’s Day means to me—and what it represents for ZimVie: progress with purpose.
